A temporary palace for the Emperor when he goes on imperial visits. It can also be read as "karimiya." The Engishiki stipulates that for imperial visits lasting more than 10 days, a staff member must be appointed in advance. According to usage in the Ryō no Gige and other documents, while anzaisho refers abstractly to the location of the Emperor, angu refers specifically to the temporary palace itself, but later they came to be used in the same sense. In official documents from the Meiji period onwards, the Emperor was referred to as anzaisho, while the residence of the Empress, Crown Prince, and others during imperial visits was called gohakusho.
