Sea elephant - Walrus

Japanese: 海象 - セイウチ
Sea elephant - Walrus
〘Noun〙 (sivuč, a mistranslation of "walrus") A mammal of the walrus family. It is about three metres long and can weigh up to 1,000 kilograms. It has almost no hair on its body, and thick skin. Its limbs are fin-like with claws at the ends. Its head is round, with stiff whiskers on its snout , and the canines in its upper jaw grow into long tusks that can reach 30 centimetres in length in females and 70 centimetres in males. It lives on the coasts of the Arctic Ocean and on the ice, digging the seabed with its tusks and preying on shellfish, shrimp, crabs, etc. Its movements are slow, but it uses its tusks to fight off predators. Like seals, it has no ears, and can bend its hind legs forward like sea lions. It uses its tusks as a substitute for ivory. Sea horse . Kaizo. ※Natural History Teaching Method (1876-77)〈Abe Tamenori〉 2 "The sea horse (walrus) lives in the far north of Sakhalin. Its tusks are long and resemble ivory."
