Cynocrambe japonica (Japanese grass)

A perennial plant of the family Sarcoceaceae. There are four known species of this genus in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, but in Japan only this one grows under trees in mountainous areas west of the Kanto region. The plant resembles chickweed, with stems 10-25 cm tall and short, recurved hairs. The leaves are opposite, short stalks, oval, 1-3 cm long, entire, and have triangular, membranous stipules. It is monoecious, and produces pale green flowers from April to June. The male flowers have three calyxes that are fused into a tube when in bud and recoil when open. The female flowers are small and sessile, with one bracteolet at the base, and the ovary of the pistil is obovate and hairy.
