Yoshino Shrine

Japanese: 吉野神宮 - よしのじんぐう
Yoshino Shrine

Located in Yoshinoyama, Yoshino-cho, Yoshino-gun, Nara Prefecture. Emperor Godaigo is enshrined here. Emperor Godaigo entered Yoshino after the Kenmu Restoration government collapsed due to traitors, and died here in 1339 (Engen 4, Ryakuo 2). After the Meiji Restoration, Emperor Meiji accepted the petition of the local people and decided to build Yoshino Shrine to enshrine Emperor Daigo. It was completed in 1892 (Meiji 25), became a Kanpei Taisha in 1901 (Meiji 34), and renamed Yoshino Jingu in 1918 (Taisho 7). The annual festival is held on September 27th (the day of the Emperor's death).
