...The system of modes (which developed especially in the 13th and 14th centuries) suggests modes, onsets, intervals, rhythms, and dynamics, and is largely reproducible musically even today. These religious songs are based on eight diatonic modes (octoechos), four authentic and four plagal. This system of modes, which originated in the Jewish Church (synagogue) and the early Christian churches of Syria and Palestine, was eventually introduced to the Roman Catholic Church (Western Church) in the second half of the 8th century, and had a decisive influence on the establishment of church modes.
