Folding ruler

A folding ruler. Usually made of wood, it is about 2 centimeters wide and 1 meter long, and is joined by pins about every 20 centimeters, from which it can be folded. When not in use, it can be folded up to a short size for easy carrying. It is used by craftsmen, architects, and other engineers to measure the approximate dimensions of buildings and machines, and when determining the installation position of machines. Recently, metal tape measures have become more commonly used than folding rules.

折り畳みのできる物差し。通常は木製、幅2センチメートル、長さ1メートル程度のもので、約20センチメートルごとにピンで結合され、そこから折り曲げることができる。使用しないときには畳んで短くし、携帯に便利なようになっている。職人や建築家、その他の技術者が建物や機械の概略の寸法を測るとき、また機械の据え付け位置を決めるときなどの寸法測定に使われる。最近は、折り尺よりも金属製の巻尺のほうが多く使用されるようになった。
