…In Roman times, Emperor Trajan (ruled 98-117) named the city Ulpia after his family. In the 3rd century, it was called Serdica and became one of the centres of the Roman Empire which expanded eastwards. The remains of the Roman baths built at this time became part of the Church of St. George in the Middle Ages and can still be seen today in the courtyard of the Hotel Balkan in the city centre. …
