〘Noun〙① Under the ritsuryo system, this was an office that belonged to the Ministry of Prisons and was in charge of prisons and criminals. There were one official each of the ranks of chief (kami) , assistant, chief priest, and junior priest, as well as Mononobe and other officials who acted as prison guards. *Ryo-gikai (718) official: "Prison office. One chief. ( Two prisoners and criminals under his control. Hard labor. Regarding merit and distribution.)" ② An institution established in the Ministry of Prisons in 1869 ( Meiji 2 ) to handle affairs related to prisons.
