〘Noun〙① Under the ritsuryo system, this was an office that belonged to the Ministry of Prisons and was in charge of prisons and criminals. There were one official each of the ranks of chief (kami) , assistant, chief priest, and junior priest, as well as Mononobe and other officials who acted as prison guards. *Ryo-gikai (718) official: "Prison office. _One chief. ( _Two prisoners and criminals _under his control. Hard labor. _Regarding merit and distribution.)" ② An institution established in the Ministry of Prisons in 1869 ( Meiji 2 ) to handle affairs related to prisons. In July of the same year, it was transferred to the Ministry of Justice, and in August it was abolished. *Newspaper Magazine - Issue 5, June 1871 ( Meiji 4) "Several inmates of the Kodenmacho Prison Office have escaped from custody."
