Japan's leading English-language daily newspaper. It was founded on March 22, 1897, by president Yamada Sueji and editor-in-chief Zumoto Motosada, with the backing of Ito Hirobumi and Fukuzawa Yukichi, and with funding from the financial world, including Mitsui, Mitsubishi, the Bank of Japan, the Yokohama Specie Bank, and Nippon Yusen Kaisha. It was the first English-language newspaper to be managed and edited by a Japanese person. The purpose of its founding was to introduce Japan's economy and culture to the world and to promote public awareness. On May 15, 1905, it switched to an evening edition, and in 1918, it merged with the Japan Mail to become the Japan Times and Mail. In October 1940, it merged with the morning edition, the Japan Advertiser, to become the Japan Times and Advertiser, and published morning and evening editions, but on March 6, 1944, it stopped publishing the evening edition, which remains to this day.
