Sakai Ietsugu

A feudal lord in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. Born in Mikawa as the son of Sakai Tadatsugu. His mother was Matsudaira Kiyoyasu's daughter Usuihime. He was commonly known as Kogoro. He served Tokugawa Ieyasu from an early age, and participated in the Battle of Nagashino in 1575. In 1576, he succeeded his father Tadatsugu as lord of Yoshida Castle in Mikawa, and the following year he was appointed Junior Fifth Rank and Miyauchi Daifu. In 1685, when Ieyasu was transferred to the Kanto region, he was given Usui Castle in Shimousa with a fief of 30,000 koku. In the Battle of Sekigahara, he followed Hidetada up the Nakasendo road, and did not achieve any notable feats. Later, in 1604, he was transferred to Takasaki in Kozuke with a fief of 50,000 koku, and in 1616, he was transferred to Takada in Echigo with a fief of 100,000 koku as a reward for his achievements in the Siege of Osaka.

安土桃山・江戸前期の大名。酒井忠次の子として三河に生まれる。母は松平清康の娘碓井姫。通称は小五郎。幼時から徳川家康に仕え,天正3(1575)年の長篠の戦に従軍している。同16年,父忠次の譲りをうけて三河吉田城主となり,翌年,従五位下・宮内大輔に叙任された。翌18年,家康の関東移封にともない,下総碓井城3万石となった。関ケ原の戦では秀忠に従って中山道をのぼったため,これといった手柄がなく,のち慶長9(1604)年,上野高崎に転封して5万石,さらに元和2(1616)年,大坂の陣の論功行賞で越後高田に転封して10万石となった。
