Darryl F. Zanuck

American filmmaker. One of the most famous producers in Hollywood's Golden Age. Born in Wahoo, Nebraska. In 1923, he joined Warner Brothers as a scriptwriter, writing the "Rin Tin Tin" series and other works. In 1929, he became head of production, and brought Warner to the heyday of early talkies with musicals and gangster films. In 1933, he founded 20th Century Pictures with Joseph M. Schenck (1876-1961), and the following year merged with Fox to form 20th Century Fox. After that, he was actively involved in the planning and production of films as vice president of production, and produced many masterpieces. He went independent in 1956, but returned as president in 1962, and held the top position until 1970. His major works include The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941), My Darling Clementine (1946), Gentleman's Agreement (1947), Pinky (1949), All About Eve (1950), Land of the Free (1958), and The Longest Day (1962).

アメリカの映画製作者。黄金期ハリウッドの名物プロデューサーの一人。ネブラスカ州ワフーの生まれ。1923年、ワーナー・ブラザースに脚本家として入社、「リン・ティン・ティン」シリーズなどを執筆。1929年には製作部長となり、ミュージカル、ギャング映画などでワーナーにトーキー初期の全盛期をもたらす。1933年、ジョゼフ・スケンクJoseph M.Schenck（1876―1961）と20世紀映画を興し、翌年フォックスと合併して20世紀フォックスを設立。以後製作担当副社長として映画の企画・製作に積極的にかかわるなかで、数々の傑作、名作を生み出していく。1956年に独立したが、1962年には社長として復帰し、1970年までトップの地位を保持する。おもな作品に『怒りの葡萄(ぶどう)』（1940）、『わが谷は緑なりき』（1941）、『荒野の決闘』（1946）、『紳士協定』（1947）、『ピンキー』（1949）、『イヴの総(すべ)て』（1950）、『自由の大地』（1958）、『史上最大の作戦』（1962）などがある。
