Castanopsis cuspidata - Castanopsis cuspidata

Japanese: シイ(椎) - シイ(英語表記)Castanopsis cuspidata
Castanopsis cuspidata - Castanopsis cuspidata
An evergreen tall tree of the Fagaceae family, it is a representative species of evergreen broad-leaved forest in warm regions of Japan. It is also often planted as a garden or park tree. It grows to a height of 10-20m, with branches spreading out in all directions to create a large crown. It has thick, leathery leaves that grow alternately and rather densely. It is monoecious, blooming in May and June. The male flowers produce long inflorescences (catkins) about 10cm long with numerous conspicuous pale yellow stamens. Several female flowers grow in short inflorescences in the lower leaf axils. The pistils have three styles. In autumn, it produces elongated, acorn-like nuts that are edible. Two varieties are sometimes distinguished: C. cuspidata var. sieboldii , which has elliptical leaves 5-6 cm long and produces elongated cylindrical nuts, and C. cuspidata var. cuspidata , which has small leaves (2-4 cm long) and produces nearly spherical nuts about 1 cm in diameter.
