Uninhabited - Muju

Japanese:
Uninhabited - Muju

A monk from the late Kamakura period. He is also known as Dokyo, Ichien, and Daien Kokushi. He is said to have been born to the descendants of the Kajiwara clan, a vassal of the Kamakura shogunate, but he had few ties with his relatives, and after moving around from Kamakura to Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture) and Hitachi (Ibaraki Prefecture), he became a monk and retired at the age of 28. After that, he studied various exoteric and esoteric sects widely at temples in Nara, Kyoto, and Kamakura. After 1262 (Kōchō 2), at the age of 37, he became the chief priest of Choboji Temple in Kigasaki, Owari Province (Nagoya City). As he himself said, "I have loved stories since ancient times, and because I served as a samurai, I took time from my training to write down idle things," he was a born storyteller, and in his later years he compiled a collection of Buddhist tales, both serious and light, writing works such as "Shasekishu" (1283) and "Zatsutanshu" (1305). The world of local samurai and common people is depicted in a simple style.
