A general term for fish belonging to the genus Toxotes in the family Archerchilidae of the order Perciformes (illustration). There are about four known species, all of which are small fish with a body length of about 15 to 25 cm, well known for their special habit of shooting water droplets from their mouths to knock down insects and spiders on the shore and eat them. The English name is derived from this habit. This habit also makes them popular ornamental fish, and they are often imported to Japan. These four species are distributed in India, Indochina, the Philippines, northern Australia, and Polynesia, and although there are some differences between species, they live from coastal areas to purely freshwater areas.
