In the early Edo period, Joruri, a popular form of puppetry in Edo, was founded by Edo's Sakurai Izumidayu (later Tamba no Jō). The heroic tales of Kinpei, the son of Sakata Kintoki, were performed as puppet plays, and the bold and rough tunes suited the Edo atmosphere and were well received by townspeople. It is said that the rough puppetry of Ichikawa Danjūrō I was also devised from the movements of this puppet.
