A mineral with a chemical composition of almost Ni 3 Fe. It is rarely found in serpentinite (Oko, Nankoku City, Kochi Prefecture, Mineoka, Awa District, Chiba Prefecture). Most are found under a microscope, have a cubic crystal system, Mohs hardness of 5, and specific gravity of 8. When olivine is transformed into serpentine, it is thought that as divalent iron becomes magnetite Fe 3 O 4 , water is decomposed to produce hydrogen, which liberates Ni and Fe contained in either olivine or pentlandite, or both, to form an alloy. As an indicator of the reduction state, it is a particularly important mineral when considering the amount and nature of water involved in serpentinization.
