Syrian Christian theologian. Greek name Bardēsanēs. Born in Edessa (now Urfa, Turkey). Although Bar Daysan's name is often mentioned by authors of the ancient church, the whole picture of his thought is not clear. He was originally thought to have been a Gnostic, but this is now denied. His affinity with Manichaeism is also questionable. However, he was certainly considered a heretic. He was a writer of Syriac hymns and astronomy, and was one of the earliest writers of Syriac literature.

シリアのキリスト教神学者。ギリシア名バルデサネスBardēsanēs。エデッサ(現，トルコ領ウルファ)出身。古代教会の著作家がしばしば名をあげているにもかかわらず，バル･ダイサンの思想の全体像はつかめていない。古来，グノーシス派であったとされるが，現在では否定されている。またマニ教との親近性も疑問とされる。だが，異端的と考えられていたことは確かである。シリア語の聖歌作者で，天文学の著作もあり，もっとも早い時期のシリア文学の著作家である。
