154‐222 Syrian Christian theologian. Greek name Bardēsanēs. Born in Edessa (now Urfa, Turkey). Although Bar Daysan's name is often mentioned by authors of the ancient church, the whole picture of his thought is not clear. He was originally thought to have been a Gnostic, but this is now denied. His affinity with Manichaeism is also questionable. However, he was certainly considered a heretic. He was a writer of Syriac hymns and astronomy, and was one of the earliest writers of Syriac literature. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
