A medieval German dynasty established by the Staufen family, Grand Dukes of Swabia. Also known as the Hohenstaufen dynasty. From 1138 to 1254, they ruled Germany virtually uninterruptedly, producing a Holy Roman emperor. The dynasty was founded when Conrad III, Duke of Franconia, of the Staufen family, was elected King of Germany in 1138 after the death of Henry IV of the Salier dynasty. The dynasty reached its peak during the reign of Frederick I and Frederick II in the second half of the 12th century, who sought to restore royal power, which had been in decline since the Salier dynasty, and to restore the glory of the empire. On the other hand, the focus shifted to the strategy for Italy and Sicily, and the governance of Germany itself was neglected, leading to division and confusion, and ending with the death of Conrad IV in 1254. A great interregnum followed.

中世ドイツの王朝。シュワーベン大公シュタウフェンStaufen家による。ホーエンシュタウフェンHohenstaufen朝とも。1138年から1254年まで事実上連続してドイツ国王位につき，神聖ローマ皇帝を輩出した。ザリエル朝ハインリヒ４世の死後，シュタウフェン家系のフランケン公コンラート３世が1138年ドイツ国王に選ばれて創始。ザリエル朝以後衰退していた王権の再興と帝国の栄光の回復を図り，12世紀後半フリードリヒ１世，フリードリヒ２世の時代が最盛期。その半面イタリア・シチリア経略に重心が移ったためドイツ本国の統治が閑却され，分裂と混乱を招き，1254年コンラート４世の死で断絶。以後大空位時代が現出した。
