She was the daughter of Tantalus, king of Mount Sipylos in Lydia (western Asia Minor), and wife of Amphion, king of Thebes. She bore seven sons and seven daughters to her husband, and boasted that she was superior to Leto, who had only two children, Apollo and Artemis. In anger, the goddess ordered her son to shoot Apollo and her daughter Artemis to kill them.
