Poor Heinrich - Poor Heinrich (English spelling) Der arme Heinrich
A 1,520-line epic poem written around 1195 by the medieval German poet Hartmann von Aue. It is said to have been based on a story written in French, but it is safe to say that it is mostly the author's own creation. The knight Henry is afflicted with leprosy as a punishment for forgetting God. The only cure is the heart blood of a chaste maiden, shed of her own free will. In despair, he seeks refuge in the home of a tenant farmer on his farm, but the girl there takes pity on him and offers to sacrifice her life for him. The two go to a famous doctor in Salerno for surgery, but when Henry sees the girl lying on the operating table, he realizes that he is not worthy of such a beautiful sacrifice and must endure it alone. This resignation and repentance bring about a miracle, and he is cured of his illness. He returns to his hometown and takes the devoted girl as his wife. This subject was later featured in Chamisso's poem, Hauptmann's play, R. Huf's novel, and Pitzner's opera.
