The god of water in Greek mythology. He is the son of the sky god Uranus and the earth goddess Gaia, and is one of the Titans. Oceanus was thought to be a great river or ocean that flows around a flat, circular earth, and was connected to all the rivers and springs of the world through the underground. In other words, Oceanus was the end of the earth, and all the mysterious places and creatures such as the Garden of the Hesperides, the Field of Elysium, the monster Geryon, and the mysterious woman Gorgon were said to be located on the banks of this great river. However, as the geographical knowledge of the ancient people improved, the name Oceanus gradually came to refer only to the Atlantic Ocean. Oceanus married Tethys and gave birth to all the rivers and 3,000 daughters (Oceanides). [Masahiro Ogawa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
