A general term for the indigenous people of Australia. The word "Aborigine" comes from the English word aborigine, which generally means "indigenous people" or "original people." Racially, they are Australoid. They have chocolate-colored skin and curly hair. Before contact with Western Europe, they were divided into small groups and lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle using bows and arrows, spears, boomerangs, etc. Anthropologically, they are known for their complex marriage rules, totemism, and coming-of-age ceremonies. The population, including urban residents, was 283,000 (1991), less than 2% of the total population of Australia. They were finally granted citizenship in 1967, but the Aboriginal movement has been carried out to eliminate the discrimination that still remains and to restore various rights, and in February 2008, the Australian government made its first official apology to the Aboriginal people. → Australian languages / Mabo ruling → Related topics Arnhem Land | Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park | Ayers Rock | Australia | Kakadu National Park | Hunter-gatherers | Didgeridoo | Northern Territory | Reservation Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
