Red seal - Shuin

Japanese:
Red seal - Shuin
〘 noun 〙① A vermilion seal. Also, the act of stamping it. [Nippo Jisho (1603-04)] * Haikai, Kebukuso (1638), 6: "Momijiba wa aki wo tagaenu shuin (shuin) ya (Koei)" * Haru no Shiro (1952), 〈Agawa Hiroyuki〉 2: "Enclose a private letter with an official vermilion seal." ② A vermilion seal stamped on official documents. It has been used since the Nara period, but since the Heian period, many documents have used a kao instead of a seal to indicate the sender and the person in charge. However, by the end of the Muromachi period, the number of documents issued by warring lords with seals (vermilion seals, black seals, etc.) rapidly increased, and Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and the generals of the Tokugawa shogunate also used it frequently. Usually, when "vermilion seals" are used historically, they refer to those from the Warring States period onwards. Also, black seals tend to be lighter in content than vermilion seals. ※Nobunaga-kōki (1598), 3: “Furthermore, I was ordered by Inaba Iyo-no-kami to prepare a red seal and send it out.” ③ Abbreviation of “Shuinjō (red seal letter).” ※Tamon-in Diary - May 8, 1577 (Tenshō 5) “In Araya-go, Enmyo-in and Renjō-in went to Azuchi, Goshū on the 3rd of last month, but as it turned out that we were in the right position, we returned home today. No red seal was issued.”
