Iketei-ki

Japanese:
Iketei-ki

Also called "Chitei no Ki." This is a Chinese essay by the mid-Heian period writer Yoshishige Yasutane, in which he writes about his feelings regarding his newly built home. It was completed in 982 (Tengen 5). It is included in volume 12 of "Honcho Monzui." It was inspired in part by "Ikegami Hen" by Bai Juyi (Rakuten) and "Chitei-ki" by Prince Kaneakira, and also influenced "Hojoki" by Kamo no Chomei. The first half, which critically describes the ruin of Ukyo and the overcrowding of Sakyo, is a valuable historical document that provides insight into the transition of Heian-kyo. In the latter half of the poem, the author writes, "Although my job is in Chūka (the Chinese name for Naiki), my heart is as if I were living in the mountains," and the author aspires to achieve both official service and seclusion. The new residence fully fulfills the author's desire to achieve spiritual seclusion. The author's ideal home is discussed along with his ideal lifestyle, which gives rise to the critical tone of the first half of the poem.
