Located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, this temple is part of the Sanmon school of the Tendai sect and is affiliated with Myoho-in Temple. It was built by Emperor Goshirakawa in 1164, and the current building was rebuilt in 1266. It is known as Sanjusangendo, so named because the interior sanctuary has 33 spaces between its pillars, and is a representative relic of Japanese-style architecture from the Kamakura period in Kyoto. The principal image, a seated Thousand-Armed Kannon statue, was made by Tankei in 1254 and is a masterpiece that shows the perfection of the Kamakura style. In addition to the twenty-eight attendant deities and statues of the wind and thunder gods, the temple also houses 1,001 standing Thousand-Armed Kannon statues made by Tankei's family and disciples. During the Edo period, archery matches were held at this temple, and it was famous for the competition to see who could shoot the most arrows (the largest number of arrows). → Related topics Kaito-so|Kanamaru-so|Koen|Chi【bi】-so|Nagashima-so|Nada-so|Numata-so|Hitoyoshi-so|Onsen-so Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
