This river originates in the northern foot of Mount Yakeishi in the Ou Mountains in southwest Iwate Prefecture, and flows into the Kitakami River in the northeastern part of Oshu City. It enters Ishibuchi Dam along the way, and joins the Shitomae River, Nagasawa River, and Kurosawa River. It is 27.9 kilometers long. There are ruins in various places along the river basin where Abe Sadato's clan fought using the Isawa River as a shield during the Zenkunen War. In 1617 (Genwa 3), Goto Juan diverted water from the Isawa River to build the Juan Weir, and started an irrigation project for the Isawa alluvial fan. In 1953 (Showa 28), Ishibuchi Dam was built upstream in Wakayanagi, Isawa Ward, Oshu City.
