British medical scientist. Born in Canada, he studied at Toronto and McGill universities, and then conducted research in London, Leipzig, Vienna, and other places. He was a professor at Johns Hopkins University and then at Oxford University. He was an authority on the spleen and the heart, particularly angina pectoris. He is also known as a medical historian. 英国の医学者。カナダに生まれ，トロント，マッギルの両大学で学んだのち，ロンドン，ライプチヒ，ウィーン等で研究に従事。ジョンズ・ホプキンズ大学教授などを経て，オックスフォード大学教授となる。脾臓(ひぞう)および心臓とくに狭心症の権威。医学史家としても有名。著書《近代医学の改革》（1913年）など。
