British medical scientist. Born in Canada, he studied at Toronto and McGill universities, and then conducted research in London, Leipzig, Vienna, and other places. He was a professor at Johns Hopkins University and then at Oxford University. He was an authority on the spleen and the heart, particularly angina pectoris. He is also known as a medical historian.
