It refers to any of the marine fishes of the Myxiniformes order of the jawless class, or the Myxinidae family, or to one of these species. The name comes from the fact that their eyes are degenerate, have no lens or iris, are buried under the skin and serve almost no purpose, and their bodies are elongated into an eel shape. The English name is hagfish (a fish that resembles an evil old woman). Two species, the hagfish Myxine garmani (illustration) and the Okinawan hagfish Myxine paucidens , live in the waters off Japan. 英名はhagfish(悪鬼のような老婆に似た魚)という。日本近海にはメクラウナギMyxine garmani(イラスト)とオキナメクラM.paucidensの2種が分布する。
