1319‐64 The second King of France of the Valois dynasty. Reigned from 1350 to 1364. Known as Le Bon the Good. Son of Philip VI. His reign was marked by political and social unrest amid the Hundred Years' War. At the Battle of Poitiers (1356), France was defeated by the English army led by Edward the Black Prince, and the King himself was taken prisoner and taken to London from Bordeaux. During this time, the Crown Prince Charles (later Charles V) became regent and tried to resolve the internal and external crises facing France.
