Parupeneus chrysopleuron (sea red carp)
A marine fish of the family Goatfish in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is called Umigoi in Tokyo, Mendori in Kansai and Kochi, Higeichi in Suruga Bay, Higoi in Shimonoseki, Semendori in Miyazaki, and Fuurya in Okinawa. It is distributed from central Honshu southward, China, and the Philippines. The body is slightly elongated and laterally compressed. It has two dorsal fins. The body is a uniform bright red color. It can reach a total length of 50 cm. Small ones have a golden band from the eye to the base of the tail fin, but this becomes unclear as they grow. Its main characteristic is a pair of pale yellow barbels on the lower jaw.

スズキ目ヒメジ科の海産魚(イラスト)。東京でウミゴイ,関西・高知でメンドリ,駿河湾でヒゲイチ,下関でヒゴイ,宮崎でセメンドリ,沖縄でフールヤーと呼ばれる。本州中部以南,中国,フィリピンに分布している。体はやや細長く,側扁している。背びれは2基。体は一様な鮮紅色。全長50cmに達する。小型のものでは眼から尾びれの付け根にかけ黄金色の帯があるが,成長すると不明りょうになる。下あごに1対の淡黄色をしたひげをもつことが大きな特徴である。
