…Construction of Nobiru Port began in 1978 based on plans and designs by Dutch engineer Van Doorn, employed by the Ministry of the Interior. The first phase of construction was completed in 1981, along with the urban planning project behind it. However, the eastern breakwater collapsed due to high waves caused by a typhoon in 1984, and there is no trace of it today. The first step in making Yokohama Port a modern port was undertaken in 1989. Since then, Yokohama, Kobe, the Kanmon Straits (Moji and Shimonoseki), and Tsuruga have been designated as first-class important ports by the nation, and one second-class important port in each prefecture, and modern port renovations have been carried out as national or prefectural projects. …
