Japanese: シギゾウムシ(鴫象虫) - シギゾウムシ

A general term for insects of the genus Curculio in the family Curculionidae in the order Coleoptera. They are so named because their proboscis is long, like the beak of a snipe. They use their proboscis to make holes in the seeds of acorns, camellias, and acorns, and then insert their ovipositor to lay eggs. The larvae develop inside the fruit. The acorn weevil that inhabits acorns is called the acorn weevil in English. Japan is home to the chestnut weevil, oak weevil, camellia weevil, and acorn weevil.

甲虫目ゾウムシ科シギゾウムシ属Curculioの昆虫の総称。口吻（こうふん）が鳥のシギのくちばしのように長いのでこの名がある。ドングリ類，ツバキ，エゴなどの実(種子)に口吻で穴を開け，産卵管を挿入して卵を産みつける。幼虫は実の中で成育する。ドングリ類に潜るシギゾウムシは英名でacorn weevilと呼ばれる。日本にはクリシギゾウムシ，コナラシギゾウムシ，ツバキシギゾウムシ，エゴシギゾウムシなどを産する。
