Lead acetate trihydrate was called lead sugar, hence the name. This test paper is soaked in a solution of lead acetate (II) Pb(CH 3 COO) 2 and dried; it is also called lead acetate paper. It is used to detect sulfide ions S 2- and chromate ions CrO 4 2- . To detect substances that decompose when heated or acidify a solution containing sulfide ions to produce hydrogen sulfide, such as ethyl mercaptan or other substances with a mercapto group -SH, or thioacetamide, hold the test paper moistened with water over the test paper or place a drop of the test solution on the paper, which will turn black due to the production of lead sulfide (II). Trace amounts will produce a brown color. With chromate ions, yellow lead chromate PbCrO 4 will be produced.
