Juunihitoe - Juunihitoe

Japanese: ジュウニヒトエ - じゅうにひとえ
Juunihitoe - Juunihitoe

A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae). It is 15-20 cm tall and covered with long white hairs. The leaves grow in 2-4 pairs on the stem, are obovate spatula-shaped, 3-5 cm long, and have wavy sawtooth edges. The leaves at the base of the stem are scale-like. Pale purple-white flowers bloom densely at the top of the stem in April and May. The upper part of the flower is about 0.9 cm long, with a small upper lip and a large lower lip with three lobes. It grows in sparse forests on hilly areas and is distributed in Honshu and Shikoku. It is sometimes grown in a pot for decoration. Related species include Celastrus monaghansis and Celastrus monaghansis. The name comes from the fact that the overlapping flowers resemble a twelve-layered kimono.
