Wheel stone

Japanese:
Wheel stone

A type of bracelet-shaped treasure made in the early Kofun period in Japan. It is an imitation of a shell ring made from processed Ootsutanoha using stone materials such as jasper and green tuff, and like the kuwagata stone crests and ishikushiro stone bracelets, it is thought to have been made centrally by the early Kinki government and distributed to local chiefs.

Older types that remain faithful to the original shell wheel form are oval in appearance with a circular hole in the center and are curved in a mountain shape. Radiating concave bands are carved into the mountain side, and some have engraved lines in the center of the edges and concave bands. Gradually the curvature on the back side disappears and flat ones appear, and some have a circular appearance. They are found in a wide distribution area from northern Kyushu to the Kanto region, but older style ones have only been found in a relatively narrow area centered around Kinai. The name Sharinishi was given to them during the Edo period, but it is not an appropriate name.
