Epistēme (Greek: episteme)

Greek word meaning "knowledge". In ancient philosophy, the word primarily referred to well-founded or true knowledge, as opposed to doxa (unfounded subjective belief). French philosopher Michel Foucault, especially in his work in the 1960s, gave the word a new meaning. He defined episteme as the totality of relations found between the various scientific discourses of a given time. It is not a closed system but opens an inexhaustible field; it is not a fixed image but constitutes a mobile totality of breaks, discrepancies and agreements; it does not prevent the sciences from coming into being but makes them possible; it is not about the rights of the sciences but about the fact that they exist.

This use of the term episteme implies Foucault's attitude of trying to describe the history of science while remaining at the level of discourse itself, of what is actually said. Therefore, episteme must be distinguished from forms of cognition or types of rationality, which refer to subjects, minds, etc. that are at a different level from discourse. The term is used particularly frequently in Les mots et les choses (1966), in which the change from the episteme of the 17th and 18th centuries, which allowed the analysis of natural history, general grammar, and wealth under the autonomy of "representation," to the modern episteme that brought about the emergence of the sciences of life, language, and labor, and the empirical investigation of man.

In the 1970s, as the domain of analysis in Foucault shifted from the discursive to the non-discursive domain, the term episteme gradually fell out of use, and was replaced by the more general concept of "apparatus dispositif." In other words, episteme came to be understood as the "apparatus" that is specifically related to discourse.

「知識」という意味をもつギリシア語。古代の哲学においてこの語は、主にドクサ（根拠のない主観的信念）に対立するものとして、根拠ある知識、真なる知識を指し示していた。フランスの哲学者ミシェル・フーコーは、とりわけ1960年代の著作において、この語に新たな意味を与えつつ使用する。彼の定義によれば、エピステーメーとは、ある特定の時代のさまざまな科学的言説のあいだに見いだされる諸関係の総体のことである。それは、閉じられたシステムではなく、くみ尽くすことのできぬ領野を開くものであり、不動の形象ではなく、切断やずれや一致から成る可動的な総体を構成するものであり、諸科学の成立を妨げるのではなく、それを可能にするものである。また、諸科学の権利にかかわるのではなく、諸科学が存在するという事実にかかわるものである。

　エピステーメーという語のこうした使用に含意されているのは、科学の歴史を、言説そのもののレベル、実際に語られたことそのもののレベルにとどまりながら記述しようとするフーコーの態度である。したがって、エピステーメーは、言説とは別のレベルにある主体や精神などを指示するものとしての、認識の形式や合理性の類型などとは区別されなければならない。この語がとりわけ頻繁に使用されるのは、『言葉と物』Les mots et les choses（1966）においてである。そこでは、「表象」の自律性のもとに博物学、一般文法、富の分析を可能にしていた17、18世紀のエピステーメーから、生命、言語、労働に関する諸科学および人間に関する経験的探求の出現をもたらした近代のエピステーメーへの変化が分析されている。

　70年代になって、フーコーにおける分析の対象領域が言説的な領域から非言説的な領域へと移行するとともに、エピステーメーという語は次第に使用されなくなり、かわって、より一般性をもつ概念としての「装置dispositif」が用いられることになる。すなわちエピステーメーは、「装置」のうちで特に言説のみにかかわるもののことであるとされるようになるのである。
