A former town in Yuri County, southwest of Akita Prefecture. The Uetsu Main Line runs through the town. It was once a scenic spot on a par with Matsushima, but was uplifted by an earthquake in 1804, and now only a small hill remains in the middle of the rice fields (a natural monument). It has famous sites such as Kanmanji Temple and Nasono Shirataki Waterfall, Kisakata Onsen, and a swimming beach, and part of it is part of Chokai Quasi-National Park. The warm climate produces a large amount of rice, and the fishing industry is also carried out. In October 2005, it merged with Nikaho Town and Kanaura Town in Yuri County to become Nikaho City. 124.02 km2 . Population 13,111 (2003). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
