An old town in Naka District, Ibaraki Prefecture, bordering the north of Mito City. Its center is Sugaya, where the Suigun Line and Joban Expressway pass. Rice fields are spread across a flat plateau. It produces rice, burdock, Chinese yam, and pumpkin. Many people commute to Mito and Hitachinaka. 茨城県那珂郡,水戸市の北に接する旧町。中心は水郡(すいぐん)線,常磐自動車道が通じる菅谷(すがや)。平坦な台地に田畑が開けている。米,ゴボウ,ナガイモ,カボチャを産する。水戸・ひたちなか両市への通勤者が多い。2005年1月那珂郡瓜連町と合併し市制,那珂市となる。83.14km2。4万7242人(2003)。
