Written by Dazai Osamu. Published in 1947. The story is a mixture of diary entries, memoirs, and letters woven together around the first-person narration of Kazuko, the daughter of a fallen aristocrat. The collapse of the established order after the Second World War is captured in the downfall of Kazuko's mother, her brother Naoharu, and the novelist Uehara, and in the figure of Kazuko, who lives her life dreaming of a "moral revolution." This work became a hot topic as the author's representative work, and gave birth to the term "declining tribe."
