For about 300 years after Grand Duke Stephen, the Ottoman Empire's control over Moldova became stronger and stronger, and even though some princes, such as Petru Rareş (reigned 1527-38, 41-46), refused to pay tribute, all attempts failed due to opposition from the great nobles and the pressure of the Ottoman army. It was the southward expansion policy of Austria and Russia that began in the second half of the 17th century that gave Moldova the opportunity to break free from Ottoman rule.
