City Council - City Council

Japanese: 市参事会 - しさんじかい

This refers to the executive body based on a council system that existed in the Prussian city system that was created by K. Stein's city reform and in the city system of the Meiji period in Japan that was modeled after it. In Japan, the city and town system was first established in 1888, and in the city system, the city council, consisting of the mayor, deputy mayor, and six council members elected by the city council, became the executive body. This city council was abolished in 1911 when the major revision of the city and town system created a single mayor as the executive body.

K.シュタインの市制改革によって生れたプロシアの市制や，それを模倣してできた日本の明治時代の市制に存在した会議制による執行機関をいう。日本では 1888年に初めて市制，町村制が制定されたが，市制においては，市長，助役，市会によって選出される6名の参事会員の3者で構成される市参事会が執行機関となった。この市参事会は，1911年の市制，町村制の大改正により執行機関たる独任制の市長が設けられて廃止された。
