A former town in Minamikoma County in the southwest of Yamanashi Prefecture. It occupies the hills on the right bank of the Fuji River. Since ancient times, many craftsmen have come to work here, and the town is known as "Kawauchi Carpenters." Fujimiyama in the west is known as a habitat for a colony of wild monkeys. The northern area is famous for Nishijima washi paper. In September 2004, it was incorporated into Shimobe Town and Minobu Town in Nishiyatsushiro County. 43.37 km2 . 4,394 people (2003). 山梨県南西部,南巨摩(みなみこま)郡の旧町。富士川右岸の丘陵地を占める。古くから職人の出稼ぎが多く,〈河内(かわうち)大工〉の称がある。西部の富士見山は野生のサルの集団生息地で知られる。北部地区の西島和紙で有名。2004年9月西八代郡下部町と身延町へ編入。43.37km2。4394人(2003)。
