A former town in Minamikoma County in the southwest of Yamanashi Prefecture. It occupies the hills on the right bank of the Fuji River. Since ancient times, many craftsmen have come to work here, and the town is known as "Kawauchi Carpenters." Fujimiyama in the west is known as a habitat for a colony of wild monkeys. The northern area is famous for Nishijima washi paper. In September 2004, it was incorporated into Shimobe Town and Minobu Town in Nishiyatsushiro County. 43.37 km2 . 4,394 people (2003).
