Yoshigo Shell Mound

Japanese:
Yoshigo Shell Mound

This shell mound is from the late Jomon period and is located in Yoshiko, Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture, in the middle of the Atsumi Peninsula. The shell layer is distributed from the gentle slope known as Yazaki Rock to the lowland in front. It consists of clams, clams, Japanese oysters, and oysters, and measures 4,000 square meters. Excavations were carried out by Kiyono Kenji and others in 1922 (Taisho 11) and 1923 (Taisho 1948), and a total of more than 300 human bones were excavated. These indicate burial methods such as flexed burial and extended burial, but there was also a special case called "platform accumulation burial" in which the skull and other bones were collected within a section divided by the limb bones. The bones of infants and young children were placed in earthenware coffins. Although there are only a few examples, earthenware coffins from the beginning of the Yayoi period contained cremated and washed adult bones. In 1947 (Showa 22), the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Properties designated the shell mound as a national historic site, and in 1951, an excavation survey was conducted in collaboration with the Prefectural Board of Education, further clarifying its importance.
