Enclosed substations are sometimes called enclosed switchgears, referring to the parts excluding the transformer. A substation that insulates high-voltage parts with either a solid such as epoxy resin, oil, or sulfur hexafluoride gas (SF6 ₎ instead of air. In the case of oil and gas, solid insulation is always required to hold the high-voltage parts. There are two types of gas-insulated substations that use sulfur hexafluoride gas: the cubicle type, in which equipment such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, and busbars are all housed together in a box-shaped container called a cubicle and insulated with a gas pressure slightly higher than atmospheric pressure, and the type in which each piece of equipment is separately insulated with a gas pressure of several atm.

密閉形変電所は，変圧器を除く部分を対象として，密閉形開閉装置と呼ばれることもある。空気の代りに，エポキシ樹脂などの固体，油，六フッ化硫黄ガスSF₆のいずれかを用いて高電圧部分を絶縁する変電所。油とガスの場合は，高電圧部分を保持するための固体絶縁物もつねに必要である。六フッ化硫黄ガスを用いるガス絶縁変電所は2種類あり，キュービクルと呼ばれる箱形の容器に遮断器，断路器，母線などの機器を一括して収納し，大気圧より少し高いガス圧で絶縁するキュービクル形と，各機器を別々に数atmのガス圧で絶縁する形式とがある。
