This refers to rocks in which small amounts of fine volcanic rock fragments and volcanic ash fill the gaps between coarse volcanic rock fragments. It is the coarsest of pyroclastic rocks. Recently, the definition of RV Fisher (1966), which states that volcanic blocks of 64 mm or more make up at least 2/3 of the total, has begun to be used, but the definition of CK Wentworth and H. Williams (1932), which sets the limit at 32 mm in diameter, was used in the past. Volcanic blocks in volcanic breccias can be cooled red-hot magma newly released by eruption, or parts of existing volcanic bodies that were destroyed and released by explosion.
