Gold and silverware

Japanese: 金器･銀器 - きんきぎんき

It can refer to any vessel made of gold or silver in general, or just to the vessel. In Japan, the latter is more common, and the former are distinguished as gold and silver products. In China, the former is used. There are production techniques such as casting, hammering, and cutting, and some products are inlaid with semi-precious stones such as turquoise, agate, carnelian, lapis lazuli, amber, and cameo, as well as glass. It is also common for patterns of other metal products to be inlaid, pasted, or plated with gold or silver. There are also alloys of gold and silver (electron, electrum). Gold and silver vessels are often crushed to make new vessels, so it can be difficult to grasp the changes that have taken place even within the same culture and region.

金または銀を素材にした器物全般を指す場合と容器のみをいう場合がある。日本では後者が一般的で，前者を金銀製品といって区別する。中国の用法は前者。鋳造，槌起，截断といった製作技法があるほか，トルコ石，メノウ，紅玉髄，ラピスラズリ，コハク，カメオの半貴石やガラスを嵌入する製品もあり，他の金属製品の文様を金銀で象嵌，貼付，メッキすることも普通である。金･銀の合金(エレクトロン，エレクトラム)もある。金銀器はつぶして新たな器物とする場合も多いので，同一文化･地域の中でもその変遷を把握しがたいことがある。
