Jamāl al‐Dīn Isfahānī

1862-63-1908
A modern Iranian anti-dictatorial and nationalist preacher. Born in Hamadan, he moved to Tehran after his father's death. He studied and cultivated himself in Isfahan while also becoming a preacher, advocating the use of domestically produced goods and the development of national industries. He later became a preacher at the Shah's Mosque in Tehran, where he delivered fierce criticisms of tyranny and had a major influence on the early constitutional movement (Iranian Constitutional Revolution). He escaped Tehran after the Qajar Shah's coup (June 1908), but was captured and killed. His book, "Masamu," co-written with several of his comrades, is renowned as a book of criticism of tyranny that sharply criticizes the corruption of the Qajar ruling system.

近代イランの反専制･民族主義の説教師。ハマダーンに生まれるが，父の死後テヘランに移住。イスファハーンで学問･修養を積むかたわら説教師となり，国産品の愛用と民族産業の育成を唱道。後にテヘランのシャー･モスクの説教師となり，激しい専制批判を展開し，初期立憲運動(イラン立憲革命)に大きな影響を与えた。カージャール朝のシャーのクーデタ(1908年6月)によりテヘランを脱出するが，捕らえられ殺害される。同志数名との共著《正夢》はカージャール朝支配体制の腐敗を鋭くついた専制批判の書として名高い。
