Engadin (English spelling)

Engadin (English spelling)
The upper reaches of the Inn River in the canton of Graubünden in eastern Switzerland. It extends for about 100 km from its source near the Maloja Pass at the southern end of the canton to Finstermünz at the eastern end. The upper reaches of the Inn Valley include the lakes Sils, Silbaplana, and St. Moritz. The towns and villages along the river are all located at high altitudes, with St. Moritz at an altitude of about 1,800 m. The majority of the inhabitants are Protestants, and although Romansh is a language that is declining, they speak it as their native language. There are many German Catholics near the Austrian border, and some Italian Catholics in the south. In the Upper Engadin, only a few vegetables are grown, but in the Lower Engadin, agriculture, including grains, is practiced. Blessed with forests, valleys, and lakes, this region is a scenic spot, and the highlands are known as a resort and a winter sports center, while the lowlands are known for the mineral springs of Scuol and the Swiss National Park.
