Portuguese author. While studying law at the University of Coimbra, he interacted with intellectuals and developed a critical mind toward traditional thought. After graduating, he worked as a lawyer for a while, but in 1873 he was appointed consul to Cuba, and after serving in England for 14 years, he was posted to Paris, where he died. His long life abroad as a diplomat gave him the ability to look at his homeland with a calm perspective, and also gave him the opportunity to come into direct contact with the European thought of the time. His works from his youth show the influence of German lyric poetry and Poe via Baudelaire, albeit in an indigestible form.

ポルトガルの作家。コインブラ大学法学部在学中から知識人と交わり，旧来の思想への批判的精神を養った。卒業後しばらく弁護士活動を行ったが，1873年にキューバ領事に任命され，次いでイギリスに14年在勤ののちパリに赴任し，そこで没した。外交官としての長い外国生活は，故国を冷静に見つめる目を与えるとともに，当時のヨーロッパの思想に直接接する機会を授けた。青年期の作品にはドイツの抒情詩あるいはボードレールを介してのポーの影響などが，不消化のかたちではあるが認められる。
