Shami - Shami

Japanese: 沙弥 - しゃみ

A transliteration of the Sanskrit śrāmanera. It is also translated as Śūji. A monk who has left home, received the Ten Precepts for a novice, and is still in training to become a bhikkhu. Girls are called sami-ni. They are divided into three types based on age: 7-13 year olds are called kuu-sami, 14-19 year olds are called ōhō-sami, and 20 years old and over are called myōji-sami. In Japan, sami refers to those who are inexperienced in training, but who have a wife and children and follow a secular occupation, in other words, those who are called nyūdō or hōshi. Many medieval sami were warriors. They were clearly distinguished from shamon, or monks.

サンスクリットのシュラーマネーラの音写。息慈などと訳す。出家して沙弥十戒を受け，比丘(びく)となるまでの修行中の僧。女子は沙弥尼という。年齢によって３種に分け，７〜13歳を駆烏(くう)沙弥，14〜19歳を応法沙弥，20歳以上を名字沙弥という。また修行未熟者の意から，形は法体でも，妻子をもち，世俗の生業に従っているもの，つまり入道とか法師とよばれる人を，日本では沙弥といった。中世の沙弥には武士が多い。沙門，つまり僧とは明確に区別された。
