A transliteration of the Sanskrit śrāmanera. It is also translated as Śūji. A monk who has left home, received the Ten Precepts for a novice, and is still in training to become a bhikkhu. Girls are called sami-ni. They are divided into three types based on age: 7-13 year olds are called kuu-sami, 14-19 year olds are called ōhō-sami, and 20 years old and over are called myōji-sami. In Japan, sami refers to those who are inexperienced in training, but who have a wife and children and follow a secular occupation, in other words, those who are called nyūdō or hōshi. Many medieval sami were warriors. They were clearly distinguished from shamon, or monks. → Related topics: Monkhood | Entering the priesthood Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
